Plan 01

1 day in Modhera

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple morning and Patan afternoon

Leave Ahmedabad early so you reach the Sun Temple soon after it opens, when the light is soft and the stone is cool. Walk the Surya Kund first, then climb to the Sabha Mandap and spend time with the pillar carvings before entering the sanctum hall. Allow two to three hours. Have lunch on the road in Mehsana or Patan, rest, then continue to Rani ki Vav in the afternoon if you have the energy. Return to Ahmedabad by evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Surya Kund20-30 minutesModerateEarly morning, when the temple front is lit and the steps are cool
Sabha Mandap30-45 minutesModerateMid-morning, when side light shows the carving depth

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Surya Kund: Wide stone steps in terraces, with limited railings and no shade. Many people enjoy it fully from the top; go down only as far as is comfortable, and take care when the stone is wet or polished.

With parents at Sabha Mandap: Reached by steps up from the tank terrace onto a raised platform. Once on top the floor is level and the hall gives some shade between pillars, but seating is limited.

Plan 02

2 days in Modhera

  1. 01

    Day 1: Temple and sunset

Arrive in the afternoon, check in at your base in Mehsana, and visit the Sun Temple in the late afternoon when the heat has dropped. If the evening lighting and projection show are running, stay on for them; check current times with Gujarat Tourism first. Return to Mehsana for dinner.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Becharaji and Patan

Drive to Becharaji, about 25 km from Modhera, to see the Bahuchar Mata temple in the morning. Continue to Patan for Rani ki Vav and, if time allows, the Patola museum, then return to Ahmedabad or onward.

Plan 03

3 days in Modhera

  1. 01

Day 1: Sun Temple at opening time

Be at the gate for opening and see the complex in full: Surya Kund, Sabha Mandap, the sanctum hall and the outer carvings. Rest through midday and return in the late afternoon if the evening show interests you.

Day 2: Becharaji and the villages

Visit the Bahucharaji temple, then drive back through Modhera to see its rooftop-solar village streets. Spend the afternoon resting.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Patan

Spend a full day in Patan: Rani ki Vav first, then the Patola Heritage Museum, Sahasralinga Talav and the Jain derasars, then return towards Ahmedabad.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Modhera trip for parents and children

  • Visit early in the day. There is almost no shade in the complex, and the stone plinth and steps get hot by late morning.
  • The path from the gate to the kund is short and mostly level; the steps down to the tank and up to the Sabha Mandap are the main challenge, and handrails are limited. Go slowly.
  • The inner sanctum is a small room reached over a raised threshold; take a hand if needed and go in only when the crowd has thinned.
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen in every season; carry an umbrella from June to September.
  • Carry a lightweight folding seat if long standing is hard; formal seating in the complex is limited.
  • If you plan a long day with Patan, add a rest break at Mehsana or Patan and ask your driver to keep the car close to the entrances.
