Area by area

Modhera neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Mehsana town

Best for: Travellers who want a proper hotel, restaurants and a railway station within reach

Good to know: The most practical base, about 26 km from the temple. Expect business-style hotels rather than heritage stays. Check lifts and parking if travelling with elders.

  2. 02

    Ahmedabad (day trip)

Best for: Most visitors, who see Modhera as a long day trip

Good to know: About 100 km each way, around two hours. Ahmedabad has the widest choice of hotels, and the round trip is manageable with an early start.

  3. 03

    Patan

Best for: Travellers combining Modhera with Rani ki Vav and Patola weaving

Good to know: A smaller base with simpler hotels. A good option if you want an unhurried second day around Patan's monuments.

  4. 04

    Himmatnagar and Danta heritage hotels

Best for: Travellers who want a palace or heritage stay in North Gujarat

Good to know: Gujarat Tourism lists Dowlat Vilas Palace at Himmatnagar and Bhavani Villa at Danta as heritage hotels for this circuit. They are some distance from Modhera, so check drive times before booking.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
