Before you go
Modhera with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit early in the day. There is almost no shade in the complex, and the stone plinth and steps get hot by late morning.
- The path from the gate to the kund is short and mostly level; the steps down to the tank and up to the Sabha Mandap are the main challenge, and handrails are limited. Go slowly.
- The inner sanctum is a small room reached over a raised threshold; take a hand if needed and go in only when the crowd has thinned.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen in every season; carry an umbrella from June to September.
- Carry a lightweight folding seat if long standing is hard; formal seating in the complex is limited.
- If you plan a long day with Patan, add a rest break at Mehsana or Patan and ask your driver to keep the car close to the entrances.

Places in Modhera sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Bahucharaji Temple, Becharaji (Places of worship · 1 hour, plus the drive) — A pilgrim town with queues on busy days. Walking is limited to the temple precincts, but crowds, heat and standing in line can be tiring. Go on a weekday morning.
- Modhera solar village (Places to visit · Drive-by; 15-30 minutes if you walk the lanes) — Level village lanes and no steps. Shade is limited and facilities are basic, so keep it short and combine with the temple.
- Uttarardha Mahotsav (Modhera Dance Festival) (Culture and craft · One evening, from about 6:30 pm) — Evening temperatures in January are cool. The walk in is on level paths, but seating and facilities vary, and crowds can be large. Carry a layer and arrange a late return.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Modhera Sun Temple (Places to visit · 2-3 hours for the full complex) — Short, mostly level paths from the gate, but steps at the tank and onto the raised platform. Shade is scarce and seating is limited, so go early, carry water and take the steps slowly.
- Sabha Mandap (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes) — Reached by steps up from the tank terrace onto a raised platform. Once on top the floor is level and the hall gives some shade between pillars, but seating is limited.
- Surya Kund (Places to visit · 20-30 minutes) — Wide stone steps in terraces, with limited railings and no shade. Many people enjoy it fully from the top; go down only as far as is comfortable, and take care when the stone is wet or polished.

Practical tips for Modhera
- Heat. From April to June, highs average well over 38 C in the region. Visit at opening time and leave by late morning; the sandstone plinth is hot underfoot.
- Getting around. Hire a car and driver for the whole day. Autos and local buses are not practical for a Modhera-Patan-Becharaji circuit.
- Walking. The complex is compact, but it involves steps at the tank and the Sabha Mandap platform. Wear comfortable, grippy shoes; stone steps can be slippery after rain.
- Tickets and timings. Entry is ticketed, and published fees and hours vary between sources. Check the current figures with the Archaeological Survey of India or Gujarat Tourism before you go.
- Photography. Handheld photography is generally fine. Drones and tripods are restricted, so ask at the gate. Early morning light suits the east-facing front.
- Dress. This is a heritage site, not an active temple, but modest clothing is appropriate and sensible for sun protection.
- Guides. Registered guides are available at the site and are worth hiring for the carving narratives on the pillars. Agree the fee first.
- Food and water. Facilities near the temple are limited. Carry water and snacks, and plan lunch in Mehsana or Patan.
