How to reach Mon by air

No scheduled airport in Mon. Dibrugarh Airport (DIB) in Assam is the nearest, about 120 km away by road, and Jorhat (JRH) is farther at roughly 150-160 km. Plan on a half-day for the road from either, depending on conditions.

How to reach Mon by train

Mon has no railway station. Dibrugarh (DBRG) is the nearest major station, about 115 km away, and Simaluguri Junction (SLGR) in Assam is a commonly used closer rail stop before the road to Mon. Check connections locally.

How to reach Mon by road

Most visitors reach Mon by road through Assam, via Sonari or Tizit, using a hired car or shared Sumo vehicles. Dimapur and Kohima are farther by road and add a long journey. Roads can be poor in the monsoon, so check conditions before you set out.

Getting around Mon

Use a hired vehicle with a local driver for village visits; Longwa is about 40 km and roughly 1.5-2 hours from Mon town, depending on conditions. Shared vehicles run on main routes, but they are cramped for long trips. Walking in villages is on uneven paths.

Easy transfers to and in Mon

  • Treat Mon as a slow-travel destination. Hill roads are long, winding and can be bumpy; schedule one village per half-day and avoid back-to-back long drives.
  • Hire a comfortable vehicle with a driver who knows the district rather than relying on shared Sumo vehicles, which can be cramped on long runs.
  • Carry your regular medicines for the full trip plus extra, along with basic first-aid items. Medical facilities in the district are limited, so know where the nearest hospital is.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
