Plan 01
1 day in Mon
- 01
Day 1: Mon town and a nearby village
A single day is tight, but workable if you are already in the district. Start in Mon town and look at the market in the morning, where elders in traditional dress are still seen. Then drive to Shangnyu or Chui, both an easy run from town, and ask a guide to introduce you to the Angh's house and the village's morung. Keep a comfortable margin for return before dark, since hill roads are slow and street lighting is thin.

Day 1: Mon town, Chui and Shangnyu
Spend the morning at the market in Mon town, then visit Chui village. After lunch, go on to Shangnyu to see its Angh's house, carved timber monument and heritage museum, and keep a donation ready for the museum's upkeep. Return to Mon for the night.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Chui village 1-2 hours Moderate November to March; early April for festival activity Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Chui village: The drive from Mon town is short. Village paths are uneven, with steps and few places to sit, so take it slowly and let the guide set the route.

Day 2: Longwa
Leave early for Longwa, about two hours from Mon town. Meet your guide in the village, see the Angh's house on the border and the morung, and walk the main lane at an easy pace. Eat lunch in the village or carry your own, and start back by mid-afternoon so you are on the hill road in daylight.

Day 1: Mon town and Chui
Arrive from Assam, settle in and see the market. In the afternoon visit Chui village and, if you are visiting around early April, ask about Aoleang Monyu events in town. The Konyak Heritage Complex at Leangha is a possible stop for an introduction to the morungs.

Day 2: Shangnyu and Sheanghah Chingnyu
Visit Shangnyu in the morning for the Angh's house and museum. Continue to Sheanghah Chingnyu only if the roads are dry and you have a local guide, since the route there is unpaved and slow, and local accounts describe a hard drive in rain.

Day 3: Longwa, or Veda Peak for trekkers
Most visitors head to Longwa for the border village and the Angh's house. Fit trekkers with a local guide may instead plan a full day for Veda Peak, which lies a long drive from Mon town and has no facilities at the top. Do not attempt both in one day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Veda Peak A full day including travel Demanding November to February, on clear dry days Pace: Veda Peak involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Veda Peak: Not suitable for most older travellers: a long road, steep forest trails with no marked route and no facilities. Visitors with limited mobility are better off in the villages.

Pacing
Pacing a Mon trip for parents and children
- Treat Mon as a slow-travel destination. Hill roads are long, winding and can be bumpy; schedule one village per half-day and avoid back-to-back long drives.
- Hire a comfortable vehicle with a driver who knows the district rather than relying on shared Sumo vehicles, which can be cramped on long runs.
- Village paths are often uneven with steps and no handrails. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick if you use one; ask the guide about the route before you commit.
- Carry your regular medicines for the full trip plus extra, along with basic first-aid items. Medical facilities in the district are limited, so know where the nearest hospital is.
- Pack snacks, water and warm layers. Meals and rest stops are few outside Mon town, and evenings can be cool in winter.
- Do not plan travel between June and September; landslides and washed-out stretches are common and delays can run for days.
