Mon neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Mon town

Best for: Most travellers; the practical base for day runs

Good to know: The district headquarters has the widest choice of guesthouses and small hotels and the best chance of a reliable vehicle and guide. Expect basic facilities. Check hot water, backup power and whether the property has steps before booking for older travellers.

Sights in this area: Aoleang Monyu festival, Chui village, Longwa village and the Angh's house, Shangnyu village and heritage museum, Veda Peak

  2. 02

    On the road to Longwa

Best for: Travellers who want to spend more time in village country

Good to know: Small resorts and guesthouses lie along the route to Longwa and in Longwa itself. They shorten the morning run and let you see the village in early light, but facilities are simpler and food choices narrower than in town.

  3. 03

Tea estate and farm stays (for example Shiyong)

Best for: Slow travellers who want a rural stay with a host family

Good to know: A small number of farm and plantation stays take guests, including the Konyak Tea Retreat in Shiyong village. These are small, host-run places with a handful of rooms, so book early, confirm road access in wet weather and agree meals in advance.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
