Mudgal is a small municipal town in Lingsugur taluk, Raichur district, about 10 miles south-west of Lingsugur at roughly 549 metres above sea level. Visitors come for its fort, a moated stronghold that stood on the border between the Bahmani and Bijapur sultanates and the Vijayanagara empire, and which the district's accounts credit with around eleven battles between the 14th and 16th centuries.
The fort is the whole point. A wide water-filled moat, rows of massive bastions, the Fateh Darwaza gate behind a barbican and a gun with a Kannada inscription remain, along with a mosque with Hindu-style pillars. The town also has old temples dedicated to Aswathhanarayana, Venkatesha, Narasimha and Didderayah, and an ancient Roman Catholic church built by Jesuits before 1557.
This is not a polished tourist destination. There are few services, little signage and no published fees or timings, so it works best as a half-day stop for travellers already exploring the Raichur area, with Maski's Ashoka edict nearby as a second stop. Hampi lies several hours away and is best treated as a separate trip.
Go with a car and driver, a bottle of water and a flexible mind. Mornings from November to February are the most comfortable.
