Plan 01

1 day in Munger

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, ghat and shrines

Start at Munger Fort in the morning, entering by the main gate and walking inside to see the ramparts and moat. Visit Kashtaharni Ghat, then lunch in town. In the afternoon go to Chandika Sthan and, if time allows, Sita Kund. Return to the ghat at sunset, when the north-flowing Ganges is at its best.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Munger Fort2-3 hoursModerateOctober to March; morning or late afternoon
Kashtaharni Ghat30-60 minutesEasySunrise or sunset; October to March
Chandika Sthan45-90 minutesEasyWeekday mornings; avoid Navratri if you want quiet

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Munger Fort: The interior is wide and mostly level, with tree-lined avenues, but distances are long and shade is patchy. Ramparts and ruined areas have uneven ground. A vehicle through the main gate helps.

Plan 02

2 days in Munger

  1. 01

Day 1: The fort and the river

Spend the morning at Munger Fort and its monuments. After lunch, go to Kashtaharni Ghat and, if you like, take a boat across the river for views back to the ghat and fort.

  2. 02

Day 2: Shrines and hot springs

Visit Chandika Sthan in the morning and continue to Sita Kund. In the afternoon, if energy allows, drive towards the Kharagpur hills to see how far Bhimbandh sits from town, or keep the afternoon for rest.

Plan 03

3 days in Munger

  1. 01

    Day 1: Fort and yoga

Walk the fort, then ask about visiting arrangements at the Bihar School of Yoga; courses are residential and access to the campus is not open on a casual basis.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Bhimbandh

Hire a car for the day to Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary, about 56 km from the southern edge of Munger district, and confirm access with the forest office before leaving.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary: The journey is long and facilities are limited. Hot-spring areas are short walks, but ground is uneven and seating scarce. Not recommended for travellers with significant mobility needs.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Munger trip for parents and children

  • Treat the fort, Kashtaharni Ghat and Chandika Sthan as the main programme; they are close together and mostly level.
  • Visit between October and March. From April to June midday heat is intense and the monsoon makes outings uncomfortable.
  • Hire one car and driver for the day so you have shade and a seat between stops, especially for Sita Kund and Bhimbandh.
  • Sunrise or sunset at Kashtaharni Ghat is calmer and cooler than midday; steps to the water have no railings in places, so take care.
  • Carry water, snacks and any medication; facilities at Sita Kund and the sanctuary are limited.
  • The Bihar School of Yoga runs residential programmes; confirm visiting arrangements with the school in advance and do not assume drop-in access.
