Plan 01

1 day in Murudeshwar

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, statue and sunset

Reach the temple early, ideally before the morning crowds, and take the lift in the Raja Gopura for the view over the headland. Walk the paved grounds to the Shiva statue and, if you are curious, the cave exhibition beneath it. Take a long lunch and rest at your hotel. In the late afternoon, walk onto the beach next to the headland and stay for the light on the statue as the sun drops. Return for evening darshan if timings suit you.

Plan 02

2 days in Murudeshwar

  1. 01

    Day 1: The headland

Do the temple, gopura lift, statue and cave exhibition in the morning, then rest through the heat. Spend the late afternoon on the beach and watch the statue catch the evening light.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Netrani or Idagunji

Active travellers can book a boat or diving trip to Netrani Island with a local operator, subject to sea conditions and season. Others can drive to the Idagunji Mahaganapati temple and stop at Apsarakonda Falls and beach near Honnavar on the way back.

Pace: Netrani Island involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Netrani Island: Reaching the island involves boarding a small boat, swell and sun, and Wikipedia notes boats anchor offshore because cliffs make landing difficult. Not suited to anyone with mobility or heart concerns.

With parents at Apsarakonda Falls and Beach: The park has paths and steps, and rocks near the falls are slippery in wet weather. Take your time and avoid the pool area in heavy rain or crowds.

Plan 03

3 days in Murudeshwar

  1. 01

    Day 1: The headland

Visit the temple, Raja Gopura and Shiva statue in the cooler hours, rest after lunch and walk the beach near sunset.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Idagunji and Apsarakonda

Drive to Idagunji for darshan at the Ganesha temple, then continue towards Honnavar for Apsarakonda Falls. Check access to the falls locally, as water levels change sharply between the dry season and the monsoon.

  3. 03

Day 3: Netrani, Bhatkal or Gokarna

Take a morning boat trip towards Netrani Island if the sea allows, or head north to Gokarna for the Mahabaleshwar temple, which shares the Atma Linga legend. Gokarna is a long drive, so set out early and keep the afternoon free.

Pacing

Pacing a Murudeshwar trip for parents and children

  • Visit the temple on a weekday morning. Weekends, Ekadashi and Maha Shivaratri are crowded and the queue can be long in the heat.
  • The temple grounds are mostly paved and level, but the stone is hot underfoot at midday. Go early or late, and carry socks if the temple allows them in the courtyard.
  • Use the lift in the Raja Gopura rather than any stairs. Confirm its running hours at the entrance, as sources give different times.
  • Sit out the afternoon heat at your hotel. October to March is easiest, but even then, noon is sunny and humid on the exposed headland.
  • A boat trip to Netrani involves a transfer into a small boat and a rough sea in places. It suits fit travellers only; most seniors will prefer the shore.
  • Dress modestly for the temple, with long trousers or a sari or salwar, and expect to remove footwear at the entrance.
