Before you go

Murudeshwar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit the temple on a weekday morning. Weekends, Ekadashi and Maha Shivaratri are crowded and the queue can be long in the heat.
  • The temple grounds are mostly paved and level, but the stone is hot underfoot at midday. Go early or late, and carry socks if the temple allows them in the courtyard.
  • Use the lift in the Raja Gopura rather than any stairs. Confirm its running hours at the entrance, as sources give different times.
  • Sit out the afternoon heat at your hotel. October to March is easiest, but even then, noon is sunny and humid on the exposed headland.
  • A boat trip to Netrani involves a transfer into a small boat and a rough sea in places. It suits fit travellers only; most seniors will prefer the shore.
  • Dress modestly for the temple, with long trousers or a sari or salwar, and expect to remove footwear at the entrance.

Easiest first

Places in Murudeshwar sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Idagunji Mahaganapati Temple (Places of worship · 45 to 75 minutes plus travel) — The compound is compact and mostly level with limited seating, and queues can be long on festival days. A car can usually drop you near the entrance.
  • Jali Beach, Bhatkal (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The beach is flat but has few facilities, benches or shade, so carry water and sun protection. Access is by road from Bhatkal and takes some travel.
  • Murudeshwar Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The walk from the temple is short and flat, though sand is tiring and there is little shade. Benches and stalls are limited, so bring water and a sunhat.
  • Murudeshwar Temple (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Grounds are mostly paved and level with room to walk, but stone floors get hot at midday and queues for darshan can be long and in the open. Go early and carry water.
  • Raja Gopura and Lift (Places to visit · 30 to 45 minutes including the queue) — A lift serves the upper levels, so no climbing is needed. The lift cabin is small and queues can be slow and warm, and the viewing area is exposed. Check the lift is working before you queue.
  • Shiva Statue and Bhukailasa Cave (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — The approach is level and paved with open space, but there is little shade around the base. The cave exhibition has some steps and a short walk through a dark gallery. Seats are limited, so pace yourself.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Apsarakonda Falls and Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The park has paths and steps, and rocks near the falls are slippery in wet weather. Take your time and avoid the pool area in heavy rain or crowds.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Netrani Island (Sports · Half day to full day) — Reaching the island involves boarding a small boat, swell and sun, and Wikipedia notes boats anchor offshore because cliffs make landing difficult. Not suited to anyone with mobility or heart concerns.

Practical tips for Murudeshwar

  • Heat and humidity. The headland is exposed and humid. Visit in the first hours after sunrise or late afternoon, drink water regularly and wear a hat for queues in the open courtyard.
  • Crowds. Weekends, Ekadashi and Maha Shivaratri bring heavy crowds. A weekday morning is the easiest time for both darshan and the gopura lift.
  • Temple dress and footwear. Karnataka Tourism lists traditional dress for the temple and asks that shorts and sleeveless tops be avoided. Footwear is removed at the entrance, so wear slip-ons.
  • Photography. Photography is allowed in the outer complex and gardens, but restricted inside the sanctum. Follow signs and staff instructions.
  • Gopura lift. The Raja Gopura has a lift to an upper observation level. Sources give different operating hours and a small fee, so confirm at the entrance and expect a queue at busy times.
  • Getting there. Mangaluru airport is about 165 km away, and Murudeshwar station (MRDW) is on the Konkan Railway, though not every train stops. NH 66 runs along the coast for road travel.
  • Sea and beach. Swim only where locals do, and follow lifeguard and boat-operator advice. Sea conditions change quickly, especially from June to September.
  • Money. Carry some cash for stalls, autos and boat operators, as small operators may not take cards.
