The short answer
Buddhavanam: what visitors should know first
Worth half a day if you like Buddhist art or want a well-laid-out, easy place for family and older relatives. It is a modern recreation, not an ancient site, and parts are still being developed, so go for the reliefs and calm rather than for antiquity.
History and context
The story behind Buddhavanam
Buddhavanam is a government project of the Telangana Tourism Development Corporation, sanctioned by the Government of India under the integrated development of Nagarjunasagar, part of the lower Krishna valley Buddhist circuit. The relief panels were carved by the sculptor Artmorf.
The layout is said to echo the Eightfold Path. The park is still being developed, so some sections may change from year to year.

Why it matters
Why Buddhavanam is worth your time
Buddhavanam is Telangana's attempt to give the Buddhist past of the Krishna valley a visible home. The Ikshvaku capital at Vijayapuri, now Nagarjunakonda, was one of the largest Buddhist centres in southern India, but most of its monuments are underwater or moved. Here the story is retold in stone and bronze on dry land, with the Amaravati-style stupa as its centre.
It is a modern creation, built by the state tourism corporation under a central scheme for the lower Krishna valley Buddhist circuit, and parts remain unfinished. That is no reason to skip it. Used alongside the island museum, it helps you picture what the real monasteries looked like and what the Jataka reliefs depict.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start at the entrance plaza, where relief panels and a central pillar topped with a Dharma Chakra set the tone, then walk to the Buddhacharita section. It has free-standing bronzes of five major events from the Buddha's life and a Buddhapada carved in green limestone. Go early if you want the quiet; coach groups arrive from late morning.
The centrepiece is the Maha Stupa, a recreation of the Amaravati stupa with carved panels and a small museum on the ground floor. Walk the circumambulation path slowly and look at the drum and railing reliefs; they are the best reason to come. Nearby, the Jataka Park holds around 40 Jataka stories carved in sandstone, and the Stupa Vanam has miniature replicas of stupas from India and Southeast Asia. A standing Buddha replica of the Avukana image was donated by Sri Lanka.
Bring water and wear a hat. Official accounts describe the park as spread over about 270 acres, so choose two or three sections rather than trying to see everything in the heat.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
