The short answer
Dhamma Nagajjuna Vipassana Centre: what visitors should know first
Only for those who want to take a Vipassana course. It is a residential meditation centre, not a tourist attraction, and courses require advance application and strict discipline. For a casual visit, choose Buddhavanam instead.
History and context
The story behind Dhamma Nagajjuna Vipassana Centre
Land for the centre was allocated in July 2004 on the edge of a hill near a planned government Buddhist heritage park. Basic buildings were ready by February 2005 and the first ten-day course ran in August 2005.
Facilities have since grown to include a mini Dhamma hall, a circular hall, a pagoda with meditation cells and solar and biogas systems.

Why it matters
Why Dhamma Nagajjuna Vipassana Centre is worth your time
Nagarjuna Sagar is named after the Buddhist scholar Nagarjuna, and Vipassana is a Buddhist meditation practice, so a centre here fits the landscape. The centre was named Dhamma Nagajjuna by S. N. Goenka, after Acharya Nagarjuna, whom the centre's account describes as the chief abbot of Nalanda.
Its grounds overlook the reservoir and hills, and its facilities include a pagoda with individual cells and a dining hall. All teaching is given freely on donations by volunteers and unpaid teachers, which sets it apart from commercial retreat centres. For anyone considering a first course, the quiet hill setting is a reasonable one.

How to experience it
This is a place to study, not to browse. Courses are residential and silent, and applicants must read the Introduction to the Technique and the Code of Discipline before applying. Applications are made online through the centre's page on dhamma.org, and a reply can take up to two weeks.
The centre offers ten-day introductory courses, teen and children's courses, and longer ones for old students. Instruction is given in Hindi, English and Telugu, sometimes in two languages in the same course. Check the schedule for the one you need.
If you are not applying for a course, do not turn up expecting a visit. Walk-ins are not part of the model, and the quiet depends on privacy. Buddhavanam, next door in spirit if not in management, is the right stop for travellers who want the Buddhist atmosphere without a retreat.
