Nagarjuna Sagar exists because of a dam. Work on the masonry wall across the Krishna began in December 1955 and finished in 1967, and the township, the reservoir and most of what travellers come to see grew out of that project. The dam straddles Nalgonda district in Telangana and Palnadu district in Andhra Pradesh, and the two states run it together.
The lake also drowned the valley of Vijayapuri, the third-century capital of the Ikshvaku kings and one of the largest Buddhist centres in South India. Archaeologists rescued what they could in the 1950s, and the surviving monuments were rebuilt on a hilltop that is now an island, reached by boat. Back on the Telangana shore, Buddhavanam, a large state-built heritage park, retells the Buddhist story with a stupa, Jataka reliefs and bronze figures.
It suits a slow trip. The sights are spread over a short drive, the pace is gentle and most of the effort is the road from Hyderabad, about 160 km away. Plan around water: boats to the island run only when levels allow, and the dam's gates open only in strong monsoons, so check local news before building a trip around either. Add Ethipothala Falls on the Andhra side for a short, scenic extra.
