Area by area

Nagarjuna Sagar neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Nagarjuna Sagar township and Hill Colony

Best for: Travellers who want to be close to the dam, the jetty and Buddhavanam

Good to know: The most convenient base for early boat departures. Choice is limited and quality varies, so book ahead and check lift access, hot water and food options if travelling with elders.

  2. 02

    Macherla (Andhra Pradesh side)

Best for: Visitors using the train or combining the falls with the dam

Good to know: A larger town with more routine services about 25 km from the dam. Useful if Sagar accommodation is full, though it adds a daily drive.

Sights in this area: Ethipothala Falls

  3. 03

    Nalgonda

Best for: Drivers breaking the Hyderabad route or adding Panagal

Good to know: About 65 km from the dam on the Telangana side. A practical stop for Panagal temples, but too far for dawn boat departures.

Sights in this area: Chaya Someswara Temple, Panagal, Devarakonda Fort, Dhamma Nagajjuna Vipassana Centre, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, Pachala Someswara Temple, Panagal

  4. 04

    Hyderabad (day trip base)

Best for: Travellers short on time who accept a long day on the road

Good to know: The dam is about 160 km away, so a day trip is tiring. Better to stay one night near the sights.

Sights in this area: Devarakonda Fort

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
