Before you go

Nagarjuna Sagar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Check the boat to Nagarjunakonda before planning the island: services depend on water level and weather, and the landing can be slippery.
  • Carry water, a hat and sunscreen; both the dam top and the island have little shade.
  • Break the road from Hyderabad with a rest stop; the drive is about 3 to 4 hours each way.
  • Buddhavanam is large; choose two or three sections and rest often.
  • The viewpoint at Ethipothala Falls involves hillock steps; older visitors can enjoy the falls from lower ground.
  • Book accommodation in advance; choice near the dam is limited and busy periods fill quickly.

Easiest first

Places in Nagarjuna Sagar sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Chaya Someswara Temple, Panagal (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The grounds are generally level, with some steps at the temple entrances. Shade is limited in the open compound, so carry water and plan visits for morning.
  • Dhamma Nagajjuna Vipassana Centre (Culture and craft · A ten-day course, or longer) — Accommodation is in individual rooms and the course involves long sitting periods. Older applicants should read the course code and discuss health needs with the centre before applying.
  • Nagarjuna Sagar Dam (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Viewing is largely from roads and level vantage points, so walking is modest. There is little shade on the dam top, and wind and glare can be tiring, so carry a hat and water.
  • Pachala Someswara Temple, Panagal (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — Mostly level ground with steps at some mandapas. Shade is patchy; carry water and rest in the museum if needed.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Buddhavanam (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours) — Paths are broad but the park is large with long distances between sections and limited shade. Pace yourself, ask about on-site transport options, and rest often. The stupa platform involves steps.
  • Ekamukhi Dattatreya Temple, Ethipothala (Places of worship · 20 to 40 minutes) — The shrine sits on a small hillock with steps and uneven ground. Ask whether a gentler approach exists and be ready to stop at the lower Madhumathy Devi shrine if the climb is too much.
  • Ethipothala Falls (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The viewing point is on a hillock, so there are steps and uneven footing, with few handrails. Older visitors can view from the lower area, carry water and avoid the stairs on wet days.
  • Nagarjunakonda Island and Museum (Places to visit · Half a day including boat travel) — The boat ride is long, with a jetty landing that can be slippery, and the island offers little shade, so it suits steady walkers. Allow slow walking between monuments and carry water.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Devarakonda Fort (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the climb) — The fort sits on a hilltop and the approach is over uneven stone, with gateways and slopes and almost no seating or shade. Older travellers may prefer to see the lower gates and the pond and leave the summit to the younger members of the party.

Practical tips for Nagarjuna Sagar

  • Water and boats. Boats to Nagarjunakonda run only when water levels and weather allow. Check at the jetty or with tourism offices on the morning of travel.
  • Heat. Summers are hot, with average highs in the high 30s to low 40s °C in April and May at nearby Nalgonda. Plan outdoor sights for early morning.
  • Getting around. The sights are spread over several kilometres. Hire a car or use local autos and taxis, and agree fares before you set off.
  • Shade and sun. The dam top, island and Buddhavanam have limited shade. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water.
  • Money. Carry some cash. Cards and mobile signal may be unreliable, particularly on the island.
  • Dress. Dress modestly for temples and shrines, and wear shoes that are easy to remove.
  • Photography. Cameras are usually restricted inside the island museum building. Ask before photographing worshippers at shrines.
  • Dam access. Access to the dam top and viewpoints can be restricted at short notice. Check on the day.
