Nagaur sits on the dry plain of central Rajasthan, about midway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. It is a district headquarters and grain-and-spice trading town first, and a tourist stop second, which is much of its charm. Traders, tractors and camel carts share the streets, and the visitor mostly gets to watch ordinary life rather than a performance of it.
The reason to stop is Ahhichhatragarh, usually called Nagaur Fort. Neglected for decades, it has been in the care of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust since 1985 and was repaired over many years with Getty Foundation and Helen Hamlyn Trust support. It won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage conservation award in 2002. Its water channels, painted rooms, pavilions and quiet courtyards make it one of the most complete restorations in Rajasthan, and it is rarely crowded.
The town also has a long Sufi history. Hamiduddin Nagori, a disciple of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, is buried here, and the old mosques and shrines add a layer that most Rajasthan itineraries skip. In winter the Nagaur cattle fair, held at Mansar village a short way out of town, brings in traders with bulls, camels and horses.
Nagaur works best as a slow one-night stop, or a long day, on the road between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Hotels are few, so decide early whether you want the fort-side heritage stay or a simple town hotel, and travel in the cooler months.
