Before you go
Nagaur with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit the fort in the first two hours after it opens at 9 am, when it is cooler, and rest in the shaded courtyards.
- The fort's lanes and floors are stone and uneven; wear closed shoes with grip and carry a hat and water, since shade is patchy.
- If you are staying in the fort, ask for a room near the entrance or a ground-floor room, and ask about assistance with luggage.
- Avoid April to June; visit between November and February. Nights in winter can be cold, so carry a warm layer.
- Do not plan a full day at the cattle fair; go in the morning with a car and driver, because the ground is dusty and facilities are basic.
- Keep medicines and a basic first-aid kit with you: pharmacies are available in town but choices are limited late in the evening.

- Nagaur Cattle Fair (Ramdevji Fair) (Culture and craft · Half a day) — The fair ground is dusty, open and crowded, with uneven ground and few seats. Facilities are basic, so go in the morning with water, wear a hat and keep a car nearby for rests.
- Nagaur Fort (Ahhichhatragarh) (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — Long walks across courtyards on uneven stone, with some steps between levels and patchy shade. Go early, carry water and use the shaded galleries and pavilions for rests; ask staff about the easiest route.

Practical tips for Nagaur
- Heat. Summer temperatures are very high. Visit between November and February, and do outdoor sightseeing early in the day.
- Cold. Winter nights can be cold on this open plain. Bring a warm layer for evenings on the ramparts.
- Getting around. Autos and e-rickshaws cover the town. For Mansar, Khimsar and other outings, a car and driver is easier.
- Walking. Fort floors are stone and often uneven. Wear sturdy closed shoes.
- Fort hours. The fort is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day, according to the Mehrangarh Museum Trust. Check the site for current rules and ticket prices.
- Money. Carry cash for autos, small shops and the fair; cards work at the hotel and some shops but not at stalls.
- Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly and cover your head and shoulders at the dargah; remove your shoes where signs ask. Ask before photographing people.
- Festivals. The winter cattle fair and the Sufi music festival at the fort fill rooms quickly. Book hotels and cars well in advance if you plan to attend.
