How to reach Namchi by air

The nearest working airport is Bagdogra (IXB) in West Bengal, about 100 km away, and a taxi to Namchi takes several hours depending on traffic. Pakyong (PYG) near Gangtok currently has no scheduled flights, so check before relying on it.

How to reach Namchi by train

New Jalpaiguri (NJP), near Siliguri, is the nearest railhead, about 96 km from Namchi. Sikkim has no railway of its own, so the last leg is by taxi or shared jeep via Melli and Jorethang.

How to reach Namchi by road

From Siliguri the road follows the Teesta to Melli, enters Sikkim and continues to Jorethang and then Namchi. Gangtok is about 78 km away. State buses connect Namchi with Siliguri, and landslides in the monsoon can delay all routes.

Getting around Namchi

Local taxis are the main way to reach Samdruptse, Solophok and Ngadak, a few kilometres from town. Shared jeeps connect Namchi with Jorethang and Siliguri. The Namchi ropeway has been reported closed since landslide damage, so confirm before planning around it.

Easy transfers to and in Namchi

  • Carry a warm layer even in spring: the Char Dham hilltop is often cloudy and chilly when the town below is mild.
  • Hire a local taxi for the day rather than relying on shared jeeps; parking at the main sights is close to the entrances.
  • In the monsoon, check road conditions before you set out. Landslides can delay journeys on the Siliguri and Gangtok roads by hours.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
