Why it matters
Why Bulbulia and Hornbill Camps is worth your time
These camps are where Namdapha stops being a camping destination and becomes wilderness. The farther you go, the more likely you are to hear and see forest wildlife: hornbills, gibbons, and signs of larger mammals.
They also show the reserve's biggest limitation. There are no vehicles, little infrastructure, and only the reserve's guards and local guides for support. That makes the experience demanding, but it explains why the forest has stayed so intact.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as an expedition, not a day trip. Older visitor accounts describe Hornbill Glade as roughly 5 km beyond Haldibari on a rough, stony path with fallen trees, and Bulbulia as a longer trek of about 14 km from Deban. The same accounts say that a same-day round trip to Bulbulia is very tiring and recommended only if time is short.
Staying a couple of nights gives better odds at dawn and dusk. You will need food, water purification, warm layers, rain gear and a first-aid kit, all carried in. Mobile coverage is absent, so agree check-in times with the reserve office and travel with a registered local guide.
Camp sites are described as overlooking the Noa-Dihing and the hills, and temporary bamboo shelters have been built along some paths. Conditions change each year, so ask the reserve office what is currently open, and have a flexible schedule in case rivers rise.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Arrange guide, porters and permits at least several weeks ahead
- Carry food, water purification and first aid
- Agree check-in times with the reserve office
- Pack warm layers for cold nights
- Keep a spare day in case of river or weather delays
