Why it matters
Why Haldibari Trail is worth your time
Walking is the only way to see Namdapha beyond the camp, and Haldibari is the most reachable goal. It gives a real taste of the park's interior without the multi-day commitment of the farther camps.
It also shows why the reserve is protected: the transition from river bank to ridge forest happens within a morning, and the sounds, from gibbons to hornbill wings, make the walk worthwhile even when large mammals stay hidden.
Highlights

The climb ends on a ridge that is picturesque in older accounts and good for birds.
- 03
An overnight option
The campsite lets you hear the forest at dusk and dawn if you plan ahead.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start at first light from Deban. When the river is low you can cross on stones and bamboo bridges; when it is high, the forest department arranges a ferry, and you should never wade unless your guide agrees. On the far side, the trail climbs about 300 m through forest, then follows a ridge to the Haldibari camp. Older guides put the walk at a few kilometres and a few hours, but pace depends on weather and your group.
Go slowly and stay quiet. The trail is richest in birds and butterflies in the first hours, and hoolock gibbons may be heard from the ridge. Leeches are less of a problem in dry weather, but carry salt or leech socks regardless. Take a packed lunch, plenty of water and a rain jacket, and tell the camp when to expect you back.
You can stay overnight at the Haldibari campsite if you have arranged it in advance, which gives better chances of animal sounds at dusk and dawn. Day walkers should turn around early enough to cross the river in good light.
