The short answer

Deban: what visitors should know first

Deban is where almost every Namdapha visit happens. Expect basic lodging, limited power and a lot of birdsong. Book through the reserve office, arrive by daylight and allow at least two nights to make the rough road worthwhile.

Why it matters

Why Deban is worth your time

Deban is the practical heart of Namdapha. Everything the reserve offers visitors, the riverside forest, the trails to Haldibari and beyond, birdwatching and the quiet nights, starts here, and it is the farthest point a vehicle can reach.

It also shows how remote the reserve is. Staying at Deban means accepting that comforts are limited and weather, river levels and road conditions decide your schedule. For many visitors that constraint is the point: a few days with no signal, birdsong at both ends of the day and a river that sets the pace.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The river bank at dawn

The Noa-Dihing is the focal point of the camp, with birds working the banks from first light.

  2. 02

    Gibbon calls

Hoolock gibbons are heard more often than seen, and their dawn calls can wake the camp.

  3. 03

    Trailhead for the interior

Treks to Haldibari, Hornbill and Bulbulia all start from here.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan to reach Deban in daylight. The road from Miao is a rough forest track of roughly 22 to 26 km according to different guides, and a local cab or the reserve's own arrangements are far easier than public transport, which ends at Miao. Check in at the camp and note where the guards and guides are based before dusk.

Use the first evening for a short walk along the river bank to watch birds, then rise early. Older accounts mention forktails, minivets and woodpeckers near the camp, and gibbon calls often carry through the morning. The tourist huts are simple, with solar lamps and candles in some accounts, so bring a head torch and charged power banks.

From Deban you can cross the Noa-Dihing on foot when it is low, or by the forest department's boat or ferry when it is high, and start the trail to Haldibari. Food at Deban is limited to a few small eateries and what the camp arranges, so carry snacks and confirm meals when you book.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book accommodation weeks ahead via the Miao office
  • Arrive before dark
  • Carry snacks, water treatment, a head torch and spare power
  • Confirm meal arrangements when booking
  • Ask guides about river levels before planning a crossing
