Why it matters
Why Koka Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Koka matters because it extends protected forest into Bhandara district. It was reserved forest from 1879 and became a sanctuary only in 2013, which shows how recently this part of Vidarbha was brought into the conservation map.
For a visitor, that history is the point: Koka is not a polished tourism destination. It is a working forest where quiet and patience pay off, and where the lake and the birds are the main reward.

How to experience it
Koka is the quiet end of the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. The sanctuary covers about 92 square kilometres of forest in Bhandara district, and a lake inside attracts migratory birds in the cold months. No village lies within its boundary, which is part of why wildlife has done well here.
Most visitors come from Bhandara, where there are more hotels than near the other units, and buses run from the Bhandara bus stand. Go in the cooler months, early in the morning, and take a guide arranged through the forest office; there are no shops or restaurants inside.
Expect deer, birds and signs of larger animals rather than guaranteed sightings. Tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur and dholes are reported in the sanctuary.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Confirm access with the forest office before travelling
- Go early in the day and in the cooler months
- Carry water and snacks; nothing is sold inside
- Arrange a guide through the forest department
