The short answer
Navegaon National Park: what visitors should know first
Go if you want an easy, low-pressure wildlife stop in the reserve rather than a tiger hunt. The lake, watchtowers and birds are the draw; leopards, bears and gaur live here but are seldom seen. Book a safari through the forest portal and allow a half day.
History and context
The story behind Navegaon National Park
The park was declared a national park on 22 November 1975. Local tradition credits two Patil brothers with building the reservoir that gives it its character around the year 1300, though the claim is traditional rather than documented.
It later became part of the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, notified in December 2013 as India's 44th tiger reserve.

Why it matters
Why Navegaon National Park is worth your time
Navegaon matters because it is the oldest protected core of this landscape. Declared a national park in 1975, it anchors the northern part of what is now the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, a forest block that links to Nagzira in the south and keeps tiger and leopard movement possible across eastern Maharashtra.
For visitors it is also the easiest introduction to the reserve. The scale is modest, the landscape is open water and teak-bamboo forest, and nothing depends on a single lucky sighting. Families with children and travellers who prefer a calm day outdoors tend to enjoy it more than the longer, rougher drives elsewhere in the reserve.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Lake and watchtowers
The reservoir is the park's centre; the towers give a long view over the water and the surrounding forest.
- 02
Birdlife
Over two hundred species have been reported, which makes it a better bet than tigers for a first-time visitor.
- 03
Forest drive
A jeep run through teak and bamboo is the best chance of deer, gaur and langur.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Navegaon is the most approachable corner of the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. The park is arranged around a reservoir with wooded hills on its edges, and the natural pace here is slow: you look for birds from the shore and the watchtowers, then drive the forest tracks hoping for sambar, chital, gaur or langurs.
You get more from it with a naturalist guide, who can find the birds that most visitors miss. Safari vehicles go in at the designated gates, so decide in advance which entry you are booked on and arrive with time to spare. The park is better known for its birdlife, with over two hundred species reported, than for big cats, so set expectations accordingly.
If a boat ride on the lake is offered when you visit, it makes a gentler counterpoint to the jeep, and is often easier for older family members than a long rough drive. Facilities inside are basic; carry water, snacks and a hat, and plan meals in Arjuni Morgaon.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Book the safari on the forest portal before you travel

Boating and accommodation inside the park are run separately; check availability before you plan around them.
