Why it matters
Why Pratapgad Fort (Gondia) is worth your time
Pratapgad matters because it is one of the less-known forts of eastern Vidarbha. Almost nothing is documented about its history, and local accounts point to the Gond rulers, though the claim is not firmly established.
For a visitor, that gap is the draw: it is a quiet ruin in a forest, with none of the crowds or fees found at better-known forts. It also shows how much of the region's heritage is still unmapped: forts, shrines and carved pillars sit in the forest with little signage, and a visit works best as a guided exploration rather than a sightseeing stop.

How to experience it
Pratapgad is a forest hill fort in Arjuni Morgaon tehsil, Gondia district, with the base village of the same name about 12 km from the town. Private vehicles can reach the dargah where the trail begins, and a 15-foot Garud pillar carved with deities stands by the road.
The climb from the dargah to the base of the hill takes about half an hour, and reaching the citadel takes roughly two and a half hours, so allow about four hours for the round trip. Only the northern route is usable. Inside are a ruined gateway, a brick reservoir and a small cave, plus sections of outer wall.
Hire a local guide; bears are reported in the forest, and the rear sections are usually avoided. Carry your own water, because there is none on the fort.
