Navegaon-Nagzira travel guide

Dry deciduous forest, old irrigation lakes and quiet sanctuaries in eastern Vidarbha: a tiger reserve for patient wildlife watchers.

Navegaon-Nagzira is a forest landscape in the Gondia and Bhandara districts of north-eastern Maharashtra. Its heart is the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, notified on 12 December 2013 as India's 44th tiger reserve. It joins five protected areas: Navegaon National Park, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, Nawegaon Wildlife Sanctuary and Koka Wildlife Sanctuary.

This is not a destination for a quick tick-off. Tigers are present, but you are far more likely to see gaur, sambar, chital, langurs and a long list of birds. Navegaon National Park around its lake suits families and birdwatchers; Nagzira in the south is better for serious wildlife watching.

Towns are small and distances are long. Arjuni Morgaon is the practical base for Navegaon, Bhandara for Koka, and Gondia is the nearest big railhead. Add a few quiet extras nearby: Itiadoh Dam, the Gothangaon Tibetan settlement and the little-visited Pratapgad hill fort.

Plan around the season and the booking system. Safaris are booked through the Maharashtra Forest Department portal, and summer heat is severe, so winter is far more comfortable for older travellers.

Food to try in Navegaon-Nagzira

Food and restaurants

Food here is simple and local. Expect Vidarbha cooking: dal, rice, jowar or wheat roti, pithla-bhakri and spicy savoury snacks. Arjuni Morgaon and Gondia have small eateries; there are almost no restaurants inside the forest, so carry snacks and water on safari days. Gondia district is a rice-growing area, and rice features in many meals. Ask your lodging about a packed breakfast for early safaris.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Navegaon-Nagzira

Shopping

Shopping is minimal. Arjuni Morgaon and Gondia have local markets for daily needs. There is no established craft street or souvenir row at the gates, so buy only what you need. Stock up on water, snacks, sunscreen and any medicines in Gondia, Bhandara or Arjuni Morgaon before heading to the gates, because the forest itself has almost no shops.

Choose without overthinking

Which Navegaon-Nagzira experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Navegaon or Nagzira, if you only have time for one?

Pick Navegaon for a calm lake, birds and an easy day with family or older relatives. Pick Nagzira if wildlife is the main goal and you can handle the longer, rougher drive.

Safari or lake and dam visits?

A safari offers a real chance of seeing gaur, deer and langurs but needs booking and comfort with bumpy jeeps. Itiadoh Dam and the lake edge are gentler and need no booking.

Stay at Arjuni Morgaon or Bhandara?

Arjuni Morgaon is close to Navegaon. Bhandara has more hotels and a bus link to Koka, but is far from the northern gates.
