Nizamabad, also known historically as Indur, is a district headquarters in northern Telangana, about 186 km north of Hyderabad. It is not a headline destination, and that is its advantage: the pace is local, the sights are uncrowded and nearly everything fits into a day or two. The city takes its present name from the title of the Nizams of Hyderabad, but its history goes back much further, to a hill fort said to be Rashtrakuta in origin.
The fort is the centrepiece, a bastioned hill in the middle of the city with a working Rama temple on top. Around it are more specific reasons to come: the hilltop Dichpally Ramalayam with Kakatiya carving, the temple-turned-mosque at Bodhan in the west, the old Neela Kanteshwar Shiva temple, and Nizam-era Alisagar with its lawns and deer park. Nothing is far, and most sights are one short drive from the centre.
For families and older travellers, the district suits a slow plan: one monument in the morning, a rest through the heat and a gentle lakeside or temple visit in the evening. Facilities at the sights are basic, so carry water, check timings locally and treat Nizamabad as a quiet heritage stop, ideally between October and February.
