Before you go
Nizamabad with elderly parents: what to know
- Plan one major sight a day and rest after lunch; summer afternoons often exceed 40C.
- Dichpally has about 105 steps and the fort has a climb to the summit temple, so older visitors can enjoy the lower levels and views instead.
- Alisagar and the Deval Masjid at Bodhan are the most level outings.
- Hire a car for the day to reach Dichpally, Alisagar and Bodhan, and agree the fare in advance.
- Carry water and snacks; facilities at the sights are minimal.
- Dress modestly and carry shoes that slip off easily for temples.
Easiest first
Places in Nizamabad sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Alisagar Reservoir and Deer Park (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — Paths are mostly level and there are lawns and places to sit, though shade varies and the heat in April and May is severe. Cars can reach the park, so walking distances are short.
- Deval Masjid (Indranarayana Temple), Bodhan (Places to visit · 45-60 minutes on site) — The ground is mostly level inside the walled compound, but there are thresholds and uneven stone, and there is little seating or shade. A short visit from the car suits older travellers.
- Neela Kanteshwar Temple (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — The compound is close to the road and largely level, with some uneven stone and steps at the shrine. Seating is limited, so it suits a brief visit.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Bodhan Fort (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes alongside the Deval Masjid) — Ground is uneven and there are no paved paths, benches or shade provided at the ruins, so visitors with limited mobility may prefer to see the walls from the road and spend their time at the Deval Masjid.
- Nizamabad Fort (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — A motorable road reaches the foot of the hill, but the way up to the summit temple is a stairway. Shade is patchy, seating is limited and some inner rooms are closed or ruined, so older visitors may be happiest with the lower levels and the view from partway up.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Dichpally Ramalayam (Places of worship · 1.5-2 hours including travel from the highway) — The temple is reached by about 105 steps from the gateway, with limited rails and little shade. Older visitors with knee or breathing problems may prefer to see the base and carvings only, taking a car as close as the road allows.
