Key hubs

Nusa Penida airport and railway station

Airport
The gateway is Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) near Denpasar on Bali; the island itself has no airport. Allow about an hour or more by road to the Sanur harbour, depending on traffic, then a boat of about 30 minutes.
Railway station
None. Bali and Nusa Penida have no passenger rail service, so there is no railway station; all travel is by road and sea.
Getting around
A hired car with a driver is the most comfortable way to see the sights. Wikivoyage lists scooters and cars for rent, but roads are rough and steep and not ideal for inexperienced riders. Ride-hailing apps were not operating when last checked.

How to reach Nusa Penida by road

There is no road link to Bali. Fast boats run from Sanur to north-coast ports such as Banjar Nyuh, Buyuk and Sampalan, and a slower ro-ro ferry runs from Padang Bai. Public boats also run from Nusa Lembongan to Toyapakeh or Buyuk. Check operators, schedules and sea conditions.

Easy transfers to and in Nusa Penida

  • Book a car with a driver and agree the day's route and price in advance. Rough, steep roads and few services make independent travel hard for older visitors.
  • Carry travel insurance, regular medicines and a copy of your prescriptions. Medical infrastructure on the island is limited, with a hospital listed at Sampalan; serious cases may need to cross to Bali.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
