Area by area

Nusa Penida neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Toyapakeh and the north-west coast

Best for: Visitors who want to be near the harbour, sunset views and simpler services

Good to know: Wikivoyage notes that most accommodation lies between Toyapakeh and Sampalan. Flatter ground and easier access to boats and shops, but a longer drive to the east-coast sights.

  2. 02

    Sampalan

Best for: Travellers who want a main town with ATMs and a hospital close by

Good to know: Wikivoyage lists a hospital on the main road in Sampalan and a couple of ATMs. Busier and less scenic, but practical for older travellers.

  3. 03

    Ped and Sakti

Best for: Beach access and temple visits on the north coast

Good to know: Ped has Pura Ped and beachfront restaurants; Sakti is the way to Crystal Bay. Choose places with road access and ask about steps.

  4. 04

    South-west and east cliff areas

Best for: Travellers who want sunrise or sunset views and are fine with long drives

Good to know: Accommodation near the cliffs puts you close to the viewpoints, but roads are steep and rough and services are thin.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
