The short answer

Kelve Fort: what visitors should know first

Yes, as part of a Kelwa Beach outing. The ruin is small and partly below the sand, so do not expect grand walls. Go at low tide in the morning, and allow an hour for the fort and a stroll on the beach.

History and context

The story behind Kelve Fort

Sources describe the fort as built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. A Portuguese report of 1727 records a garrison of sixty men, of whom seven were European, with fifteen guns, most of them unserviceable. The Marathas captured it on 10 January 1739 after the siege of Vasai Fort, and the British took it in 1818. It was partly unearthed from the sand in 2008 to 2009.

Why it matters

Why Kelve Fort is worth your time

Kelve Fort is a small piece of a larger story: the Portuguese chain of coastal outposts that stretched from Vasai to Daman. A 1727 report records a small garrison here, and the Marathas under Chimaji Appa took it in January 1739 after the fall of Vasai.

Its condition is the story. Half buried in sand and partly unearthed in recent years, it looks more like a ruin returning to the shore than a monument, and that is its charm. It is a good first stop on a Palghar coast day because it asks little of you.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach Kelwa Beach in the morning, when the sun is gentler and the tide is lower. The fort stands among casuarina trees by the sand, close to the beach, and half of it lies below the sand level, which is the reason it survived unseen for so long. Walk round the walls slowly and look for the remaining bastions and gateways.

The beach has two forts. One, at the southern tip, floods at high tide, and a smaller one lies among conifers near the northern end. Check tide times locally before walking across, and do not wade through rising water. Afterwards, walk along the sea edge, visit the Shitla Devi temple that stands beside the beach, and eat at one of the small snack stalls.

Carry water, wear a hat, and keep valuables out of sight. A quiet weekday suits the setting best.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check tide timings before heading out
  • Go in the morning
  • Carry water and sun protection
  • Wear footwear for soft sand
  • Confirm access locally
