Palghar is the administrative centre of Palghar district, created in 2014 from the old Thane district, and sits on the Western Railway line about 90 to 110 km north of Mumbai. It is a working town, but its surroundings hold some of the Konkan's best-preserved coastal history.

The coast here was contested by the Gujarat Sultanate, the Portuguese, the Marathas and the British, and each left forts. Shirgaon Fort, a black basalt fort reportedly dating to 1225, lies only about 6.5 km from town. Kelve Fort, half buried in the sand of Kelwa Beach, and Tarapur Fort, still held by the Chorge family, show other sides of the story. Inland, Asheri Fort offers a harder hill trek near the highway.

The district is also home to the Warli community, whose painting and Tarpa dance are among the best-known traditions of Maharashtra's tribal belt. Museums and craft outlets are better found in Mumbai, but the culture shapes the countryside.

Palghar is best treated as a quiet base for forts and a beach day. Plan for November to February, start early, and keep expectations modest: facilities are simple and sights are often unsigned.
