Kohoj Fort: what visitors should know first

History and context

The story behind Kohoj Fort

Kohoj is said to be about 800 years old. It was among the 23 forts surrendered by Shivaji to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar in 1665, and it served as a lookout over the coastal plain.

Why it matters

Why Kohoj Fort is worth your time

Kohoj stands alone above the plain between the Western Railway coast and Wada, which explains its old role as a lookout over the coast. It is one of the most distinctive hills in Palghar district.

It is also a good place to see how weather has shaped the Sahyadri basalt over a very long time. The rock pinnacles near the top, one of which resembles a human figure from certain angles, were carved by wind erosion.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Kohoj is about 104 km from Mumbai. From Manor on the Mumbai to Ahmedabad highway, take the Wada road; the fort appears on the right after about 10 km. The trail leaves the fort road near a lake at the foot of the hill and starts from Vaghote village.

The climb to the main plateau takes about two and a half hours on a moderately steep path. On the plateau is a restored Shiva temple with cisterns in front and a group of seven joined cisterns below it. A path to the right climbs past three large cisterns, a Hanuman idol and the wind-carved pinnacles to a Krishna temple and the highest point, 10 to 15 minutes further.

Some cisterns hold water, but carry all you need. From the top, Tandulwadi, Takmak and Asheri forts and the Arabian Sea are visible on a clear day. Start early to avoid the midday heat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start from Vaghote in the morning
  • Carry plenty of water; do not rely on the cisterns
  • Wear grip shoes and sun protection
  • There is no stay on the fort; plan to be down by dusk

Timing, access and comfort

Area
Vaghote village, off the Manor to Wada road, Palghar district
Time needed
Most of a day: about 2.5 hours up, time on the fort, then the descent
Best time
October to February; the monsoon is green but the path is slippery

Moderate
Senior comfort
The climb is a steady, fairly steep 2.5 hours on a rough path with little shade, and there is no accommodation on top. Older travellers should not attempt it. They can drive along the Manor to Wada road, where the fort and the lake at its foot are clearly visible, while others climb.
Tickets and access
No official ticket is published. There is no accommodation on the fort and the small temple has room for only two people. Maharashtra districts often issue prohibitory orders (now under Section 163 of the BNSS, formerly Section 144) that close or restrict forts, waterfalls and dams during the monsoon, especially after accidents. Confirm current access with the local police, forest office or a registered trek organiser before you set out.
