History and context

The story behind Hastagiri Jain Tirth

According to Jain tradition, the hill is named after the elephant of Bharat Chakravarti, who is said to have attained liberation here. The present temple is a recent construction; it is described by Gujarat Tourism as a four-faced octagonal temple built under the supervision of a Mumbai devotee.

Why it matters

Why Hastagiri Jain Tirth is worth your time

In Jain tradition, Hastagiri is linked to Bharat, the eldest son of the first tirthankara, Adinatha, who is said to have attained liberation here; the name refers to his elephant, which is also said to have fasted. It is thus considered part of the sacred geography of the Shatrunjaya hills.

For travellers, the practical importance is access. It offers a Jain pilgrimage setting, a substantial modern temple and a view of Shatrunjaya from a distance, without 3,500 steps. It is a good second day after Palitana, or the main day for anyone who cannot climb.

How to experience it

Hastagiri is reached by road from Palitana in around half an hour, with the village of Jalia at the foot of the hill. Taxis can drive most of the way up, which makes it the practical choice for older travellers or those who are short of time.

The main temple is a four-faced octagonal shrine with 72 small shrines around it, and the white image of Adinatha faces each direction. From the top you can look across to the Shatrunjaya hill and the wider plain, which is part of the draw if you were unable to climb the main hill.

Allow time for a short rest in the shade and a look at the small shrine with footprints on the hill. Respect the usual rules: dress modestly, avoid leather and ask before photographing. There are dharamshalas and food places at Jalia, but check what is open before you rely on them.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a taxi from Palitana for the half-day
