Palitana is a pilgrimage town first and a tourist stop a distant second. It sits in Bhavnagar district in Saurashtra, about 50 km south-west of Bhavnagar city, and exists because of the hill that rises behind it: Shatrunjaya, the most sacred site for Svetambara Jains. On its crest, reached by roughly 3,500 to 3,750 stone steps depending on who counts, stand somewhere above 860 temples grouped into walled enclosures called tuks. The oldest foundations are medieval, but most of what you see was rebuilt after the destruction of the 14th century and again in the 16th.

The visit is organised around the hill, and the hill is organised around rules. It is climbed in the early morning, the temples shut in the afternoon, and no one stays overnight on the summit. The complex closes entirely during the four monsoon months. Leather is not allowed, food and water are not taken into the shrines, and most pilgrims climb on foot. Visitors are welcome, but the place is a working shrine, so quiet dress, quiet voices and patience with queues are part of the price of admission.

The town itself is modest. Palitana was declared meat-free in 2014, and its eating places serve vegetarian Gujarati food and Jain meals; there is little to see below the hill except the dharamshalas along Taleti Road and the bus-stand bustle of pilgrims arriving. Most people come for a single, long morning and either stay a night in Palitana or return to Bhavnagar. For senior travellers the climb is the question: it is long and sustained, but doli bearers carry those who cannot manage it, and it can be done slowly, with rests, if you start early and in the cool season.

How many days do you have?

Palitana itinerary

One good day

1 day in Palitana

Reach Taleti Road the evening before if you can, so you are at the foot of the hill at first light. Climb slowly in the cool hours, pausing at the water and rest stations, or hire a doli at the base for the ascent. Spend time at the Adinath temple and in the Chaumukhji tuk, then start back down while the sun is still gentle, as everyone must leave the hill before dusk. Eat a simple vegetarian lunch in town and rest through the afternoon. If you have energy left, walk a little along Taleti Road to see the dharamshalas and pilgrim traffic.

Day-by-day plan →

Two days

2 days in Palitana

Make the hill the whole of the first morning: an early start, a steady climb, unhurried time at the main temples and a careful descent. Return to the hotel by early afternoon for a long rest. In the evening, walk Taleti Road quietly and eat a Jain or Gujarati thali.

Day-by-day plan →

Three unhurried days

3 days in Palitana

Arrive from Ahmedabad or Bhavnagar by mid-afternoon, settle in and rest. Walk to the base of the hill in the evening to see where the climb starts and how the doli stand works. Eat early and sleep early.

Food to try in Palitana

Food and restaurants

Palitana's food is vegetarian by law and by custom. Since August 2014 the sale of meat, fish and eggs and animal slaughter within the town have been banned, and the result is a simple repertoire: Gujarati thalis with dal, kadhi, seasonal vegetables and rotli, and Jain cooking that leaves out onion, garlic and root vegetables. Many dharamshalas and bhojanshalas near the hill serve pilgrims' meals at fixed times, and these are the most reliable places to eat if you are not fussy about decor.

Pilgrims traditionally do not eat or drink while climbing, and food is not allowed inside the temples. Eat before dawn if you must, carry only water, and plan lunch for when you return. Sweet shops and tea stalls near the bus stand sell farsan and gathiya for the road. Menus change and small places open and close, so ask your hotel or dharamshala which kitchen is running when you arrive rather than relying on a fixed name.

Shopping in Palitana

Shopping

There is little shopping in Palitana beyond what pilgrims need. Stalls along the approach to the hill sell religious items such as images, prayer books, rosaries and small brass lamps, along with sun hats, water bottles and white cotton clothing. Prices are informal, so agree before buying. For a wider choice of Saurashtra textiles and handicrafts, Bhavnagar's bazaars are a better stop, but check what is made locally before you pay for anything described as traditional.

Choose without overthinking

Which Palitana experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Climb Shatrunjaya on foot or take a doli?

Walk if you are fit, started at first light and are happy to rest often; the climb is steady rather than technical. Take a doli if you have knee, heart or balance concerns, or the group has older members; the bearers carry you up in a chair, and you can walk the descent or ride both ways. Agree the fare before you sit.

Shatrunjaya or Hastagiri if you can't do the long climb?

Shatrunjaya is the major temple city and the reason to visit. Hastagiri is much smaller but has a road most of the way to the top, with a four-faced Adinath temple and wide views, so it suits anyone who cannot manage the steps and still wants a Jain pilgrimage site.

Stay in Palitana or day trip from Bhavnagar?

Stay in Palitana if you want a first-light start without a long drive and a rest afternoon nearby. Day-trip from Bhavnagar if you want a better hotel and more food choice; you will leave before dawn and spend about three hours on the road.

Heritage stay or dharamshala?

A dharamshala on Taleti Road puts you at the foot of the hill with fixed meals and plain rooms, and suits pilgrims. Vijay Vilas Palace is quieter, has more character and views of the hill, but needs a car for the hill itself.

Know before you go

Palitana travel tips

  1. 01

    Timing

Start before sunrise. Temple access is limited to daytime and everyone must be off the hill before dusk, so a dawn start gives you the cool hours and a margin of safety. Check opening hours with the site's trust, as published times vary between sources.

  2. 02

    Leather and clothing

Leather belts, wallets, purses and shoes are not allowed. Wear modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and cotton for the heat. White clothing is traditional for pilgrims but not required of visitors.

  3. 03

    Food and water

Pilgrims normally do not eat or drink on the hill, and food is not allowed in the shrines. Water points sit along the route. Eat before you start, drink sensibly, and keep your own bottle.

  4. 04

    Doli

A doli is a seat carried by bearers. Ask at the base, agree the fare and whether it covers both directions, and check that the bearers are registered with the site's operators.

  5. 05

    Heat and season

Daytime highs rise above 38 degrees Celsius in April and May. The most comfortable months are November to February. The hill is closed for roughly four monsoon months.

  6. 06

    Photography

Rules on photography inside the temples vary and may include a fee; ask staff before you shoot, and never photograph worshippers or priests without permission.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry cash in small notes for doli fares, donations, autos and small stalls. Withdraw what you need in Bhavnagar or Ahmedabad before arriving, as services in a small town are limited.

  8. 08

    Pilgrim peaks

Rooms and transport fill around Kartik Purnima (October or November) and other festival dates. Book ahead and expect long queues at the temples on those days.

Palitana with elderly parents: what to know

  • Start the climb at first light. The cool hours matter more than any other single decision, and the descent must be finished before dusk in any case.
  • Take a doli if you doubt your knees or heart. The bearers carry you up in a chair slung on poles; ask at the base about the fare and agree it before you sit.

Useful answers

Palitana FAQs

How many steps are there at Shatrunjaya?

Sources give roughly 3,500 to 3,750 steps, depending on how the count is made. The route is about 3.5 km one way and takes most people two to three hours going up at a steady pace.

Can elderly people visit the Palitana temples?

Yes, using a doli, a chair carried by bearers. Others climb slowly with rests, starting at first light. If the hill is too much, Hastagiri Jain Tirth has a road most of the way up.

When is Shatrunjaya closed?

The hill is closed for about four monsoon months, roughly June to September. It is also closed to overnight stays all year, so everyone must come down before dusk. Check exact dates with the trust that runs the site before travelling.

Is there anything non-Jains need to know?

Visitors of all faiths can climb, but the hill is a working shrine. Avoid leather, do not take food into the temples, dress modestly and ask before photographing.

Can you eat non-vegetarian food in Palitana?

No. The town has banned the sale of meat, fish and eggs since 2014, and the legality of that ban has been argued in court. Expect vegetarian Gujarati and Jain food.

How long should I stay in Palitana?

One night and two days is enough for the hill and a rest. Add a third day for Hastagiri, Bhavnagar and, between mid-October and mid-June, Velavadar.
