Before you go

Palitana with elderly parents: what to know

  • Start the climb at first light. The cool hours matter more than any other single decision, and the descent must be finished before dusk in any case.
  • Take a doli if you doubt your knees or heart. The bearers carry you up in a chair slung on poles; ask at the base about the fare and agree it before you sit.
  • Carry water but eat nothing on the hill. Food is not allowed in the temples, so eat before you start and plan a meal for the return.
  • Break the climb into short stretches. Rest stations and water points are spaced along the route; use them instead of pushing through.
  • No leather: belts, wallets, bags and shoes. Wear modest, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and check the footwear rules with staff at the base.
  • If the steps are too much, choose Hastagiri Jain Tirth instead, which has a road most of the way up, or simply spend the morning seeing the hill from the foot.

Easiest first

Places in Palitana sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Hastagiri Jain Tirth (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours including the drive up) — A road of about 3.5 km leads up the hill, usable by cars, taxis and buses, so there is little climbing. Expect some steps at the temple itself and exposed stone in the sun.
  • Palitana town and its vegetarian food (Culture and craft · A few hours, or an overnight stay) — The town is flat and compact. Roads are busy with autos and pilgrims, and pavements are uneven, but nothing requires strenuous walking.
  • Taleti Road and the base of the hill (Culture and craft · 30 to 60 minutes, more if you start the climb here) — The road is level, with plenty of places to sit and tea stalls, although traffic and crowds can be busy around festivals and early mornings.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Adinath Temple, Shatrunjaya (Places of worship · 45 to 90 minutes) — There are steps within the enclosure and the stone floors are hot at midday. Once you are up the hill, the temple itself involves less walking than the climb, but queues at busy times can mean standing for a while.
  • Chaumukhji Tuk (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The tuk is reached by paved paths at the summit with some steps; it is mostly level inside, with open courtyards and stone floors that get hot by late morning.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Shatrunjaya Hill climb (Places to visit · Half a day: 2 to 3 hours up, 2 to 3 hours at the temples, then the descent) — The route is a continuous stone stairway of some 3.5 km with shade and water points but few places to sit for long. Dolis (carried chairs) are available at the base for those who cannot walk; the descent is hard on knees.

Practical tips for Palitana

  • Timing. Start before sunrise. Temple access is limited to daytime and everyone must be off the hill before dusk, so a dawn start gives you the cool hours and a margin of safety. Check opening hours with the site's trust, as published times vary between sources.
  • Leather and clothing. Leather belts, wallets, purses and shoes are not allowed. Wear modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and cotton for the heat. White clothing is traditional for pilgrims but not required of visitors.
  • Food and water. Pilgrims normally do not eat or drink on the hill, and food is not allowed in the shrines. Water points sit along the route. Eat before you start, drink sensibly, and keep your own bottle.
  • Doli. A doli is a seat carried by bearers. Ask at the base, agree the fare and whether it covers both directions, and check that the bearers are registered with the site's operators.
  • Heat and season. Daytime highs rise above 38 degrees Celsius in April and May. The most comfortable months are November to February. The hill is closed for roughly four monsoon months.
  • Photography. Rules on photography inside the temples vary and may include a fee; ask staff before you shoot, and never photograph worshippers or priests without permission.
  • Money. Carry cash in small notes for doli fares, donations, autos and small stalls. Withdraw what you need in Bhavnagar or Ahmedabad before arriving, as services in a small town are limited.
  • Pilgrim peaks. Rooms and transport fill around Kartik Purnima (October or November) and other festival dates. Book ahead and expect long queues at the temples on those days.
