Why it matters
Why Velavadar Blackbuck National Park is worth your time
Velavadar protects one of the last significant tropical grasslands in India and one of the most important blackbuck populations. The park covers about 34 sq km in the Bhal region and was established in 1976, with an extension in 1980.
For travellers on a Palitana trip, it adds a different Gujarat: open grass, wolf and bird conservation, and a slower, quieter day. It also suits families and older visitors, as it is done by vehicle.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Velavadar is a flat, open grassland park, and you tour it by vehicle on tracks with a mandatory guide. Come early in the morning, when the animals are most active and the light is soft. The blackbuck herds are the easy sight, often in groups of females and young with separate male groups.
Wolves are present but elusive, and in winter harriers roost in large numbers on the grassland, so a binocular and patience help. Nilgai and striped hyena are also recorded. Bring water, sun protection and a hat, as shade is scarce.
Plan the day carefully: the park is about 47 km from Bhavnagar and further from Palitana, so combine it with a night in Bhavnagar rather than rushing from the temples.
