Plan 01
1 day at Palolem
- 01
Day 1: Backwaters at dawn, shacks by noon
Be on the sand early, when it is cool and fishing boats are still out. Walk to the northern end, where kayaks can be hired for the backwater channel and the view of Canacona Island. Have breakfast at a café on the village side of the beach, then swim in the shallow north end before the sun is high. Take lunch and a long rest in the shade, ideally at a shack with fans or somewhere set back from the sand. In the late afternoon, walk south over the rocks towards Colomb for the light, and stay for sunset on the beach. Finish with dinner at a shack, and book ahead in December and January.

Day 1: Beach and village
Spend the morning on the sand and in the water, then walk the village lanes behind the beach for a South Indian or fish-thali lunch. Rest in the afternoon. Around four, walk the path south to Colomb and Patnem; at low tide the beach walk is easy, and the cafés on the way make good stops. Return for sunset and dinner on the beach.

Day 2: Forest or fort
Hire a car or taxi for the morning. Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is about 12 km away and works best early, when its watchtower is quiet. Alternatively drive to Cabo de Rama fort, about 24 km away, for ramparts and the sea view. Return by lunchtime, rest, and keep the evening easy, with a café or live music at one of the beachfront places.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary 2 to 3 hours Moderate Early morning or late afternoon, October to March Cabo de Rama Fort 1 to 2 hours Moderate Morning or late afternoon, October to March Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary: Trails are on forest ground with roots and slopes, and the watchtower is reached by climbing. Choose a short trail, bring water, and use a car, since public transport stops about 2 km from the gate.
With parents at Cabo de Rama Fort: There is walking on uneven stone and exposed ground with little shade, and the cliffs are steep. Go with a driver, take water, and keep to the paths nearest the entrance if mobility is limited.

Day 1: Settle in
Arrive, choose your stretch of beach and keep the day light. Swim in the north end, have lunch and a rest, then walk the sand at sunset. Dinner at a shack near your stay.
- 02
Day 2: Water and wellness
Start with kayaking on the backwater at the northern end, or an early boat trip if you want to look for dolphins, then breakfast. Spend the middle of the day resting, or take a yoga or massage session at a stay or studio. In the evening, walk over to Patnem for a quieter dinner.

Day 3: Cotigao and Canacona
Drive to Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary early for the forest trails and the watchtower. Return through Chaudi, the Canacona market town, and visit the Saturday bazaar if it is a Saturday. Spend the afternoon on the beach, and finish at Cabo de Rama fort at sunset only if you have energy and a driver.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Palolem Beach trip for parents and children
- Book a stay close to the sand with a fan or air-conditioning, and ask about steps. Many huts are raised on stilts or have a stair or two at the porch.
- Swim in the morning or late afternoon, and stay in the shallow north end. Do not swim in the monsoon, after dark, or when red flags are up.
- Plan activity for the first and last hours of the day. Between noon and three the sand is hot, and shade and a cold drink matter more than any plan.
- Use a car or taxi for Cotigao, Cabo de Rama and Chaudi. Autos are fine for short hops, but agree the fare before you start.
- Bring a torch, a hat, closed shoes for the rocks and reef-safe sunscreen. Carry cash in small notes, as cards are not accepted everywhere.
- Confirm that your preferred shack, café or stay is open, especially in October and again in April and May, when many places run limited hours.
