Before you go

Palolem Beach with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book a stay close to the sand with a fan or air-conditioning, and ask about steps. Many huts are raised on stilts or have a stair or two at the porch.
  • Swim in the morning or late afternoon, and stay in the shallow north end. Do not swim in the monsoon, after dark, or when red flags are up.
  • Plan activity for the first and last hours of the day. Between noon and three the sand is hot, and shade and a cold drink matter more than any plan.
  • Use a car or taxi for Cotigao, Cabo de Rama and Chaudi. Autos are fine for short hops, but agree the fare before you start.
  • Bring a torch, a hat, closed shoes for the rocks and reef-safe sunscreen. Carry cash in small notes, as cards are not accepted everywhere.
  • Confirm that your preferred shack, café or stay is open, especially in October and again in April and May, when many places run limited hours.

Easiest first

Places in Palolem Beach sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Backwater Kayaking and Canacona Island (Sports · 1 to 2 hours) — Tandem kayaks and boats are easier than solo ones, but getting in and out can be wobbly for anyone with balance issues. Choose calm mornings, ask for a lifejacket and consider a boatman instead.
  • Casa del Mar (Ciarans) (Food and restaurants · 1 to 2 hours) — The restaurant is at beach level with tables under cover, so there are no stairs, but the sand is soft and live music can be loud late in the evening. Ask for a table away from the speakers.
  • Karma Cafe (Karma Bakery) (Food and restaurants · 30 to 60 minutes) — It is on a flat, walkable lane with simple seating and some shade. The walk from Palolem is easy but unshaded in places, so go early or take an auto for part of the way.
  • Little World (Food and restaurants · 45 to 90 minutes) — It is on a flat street a short walk from the beach, with a shaded garden and seating at table height, which is easier than sand in the hot hours. Ask for a table in the shade or near a fan.
  • Rumba Cafe (Food and restaurants · 45 to 75 minutes) — It is a flat, short walk from the beach and the café has simple seating, though it can be busy and noisy in the evening. Go earlier for a calmer table and a cooler meal.
  • The Mill (Food and restaurants · 45 to 75 minutes) — It is on a flat village road, a few minutes from the beach, with ordinary table seating. The road is quiet, but there is little shade on the walk, so go in the cooler hours.
  • Zest Palolem (Food and restaurants · 1 to 2 hours) — Seating is at or near sand level with a comfortable chair and a roof, so there are no real steps. The sand is soft to walk on, and the loos and the cooler hours matter more than the walk.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Chaudi Market (Canacona) (Shopping · 1 to 2 hours) — The market is a busy, uneven town centre with traffic and little seating. Go by auto or car, keep it short and avoid the hottest hours, and ask your driver to wait.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Palolem Beach

  • Swimming safety. Swim only in the shallow dry-season bay, follow the red and green flags and lifeguard instructions, and do not swim after dark. Drishti Marine has warned against entering the water at all during the monsoon, even near the shore.
  • Seasons. The beach runs on a seasonal cycle: shacks and huts are put up around October and taken down before the monsoon. Peak weeks from Christmas to New Year are crowded and expensive, so book ahead.
  • Heat. Days in the dry season are warm and humid, with mean highs of 31 to 33°C at the nearest weather station. Plan walking for the early morning and late afternoon, wear a hat and drink water often.
  • Getting around. Walk the beach and lanes, take an auto for Chaudi and Patnem, and agree the fare first. Scooters can be hired locally, but traffic on the main road is fast. Hire a car and driver for Cotigao and Cabo de Rama.
  • Money. Carry enough cash in small notes. Boatmen, kayak hirers, small cafés and many shacks do not take cards, and the nearest bank counters are in Chaudi.
  • Dress. Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover up in the village lanes and when visiting temples or churches. Closed shoes help on the rocks towards Colomb, which are slippery.
  • Noise and sleep. Live music and headphone parties run on certain nights in season. If you want quiet, ask about the nearest venue before booking and choose the north end or a stay in the lanes behind.
  • Wildlife and the sea. Do not feed or handle the monkeys on and around Canacona Island. Book dolphin and boat trips with operators who keep a respectful distance, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
