Day 1: Stepwell, textiles and temples
Reach Rani ki Vav soon after it opens and spend about ninety minutes working down the levels at your own pace. Drive to Sahasralinga Talav for a short look at the ruins, then continue to the Patan Patola Heritage Museum for the loom demonstration, ideally by appointment. Have lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, visit the Panchasara Parshwanath Jain temple and, by prior arrangement, the manuscript library. End with a slow walk through the old-town lanes.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Rani ki Vav 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Early morning or the last hour before closing, October to March; the shaft is shaded but the approach is open and hot at midday Sahasralinga Talav 30 to 45 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon, October to March, when the open ground is cooler Patan Patola Heritage Museum 45 to 60 minutes Easy Mid-morning to afternoon on a working day, October to March; the official listing gives 10 am to 6 pm Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Rani ki Vav: The route down is a long run of broad stone steps with few railings and no lift. Many older visitors walk to the first or second level, where the best sculpture panels begin, and return the same way. Carry water and sit on the landings; the stone can be slippery after rain.
With parents at Sahasralinga Talav: The site is open ground with uneven earth, scattered stone and little shade or seating. Short walks along the edge and to the main viewpoints are feasible for most older visitors, but the full circuit of the embankments is tiring in heat.

Day 2: Modhera and Siddhpur
Drive to the Modhera Sun Temple in the morning for the Surya Kund and the carved halls. Return via Siddhpur for the ruined Rudra Mahalaya and a slow walk through the Bohra Vad mansions. Allow for a long lunch and an early return to avoid evening traffic.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Modhera Sun Temple 1.5 to 2 hours on site, plus travel Moderate Early morning or late afternoon, October to March; the January dance festival adds crowds Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Modhera Sun Temple: Paths across the complex are level, but there is little shade and a number of steps up to the halls and around the tank. Sit on the shaded platforms when you need to, and skip the tank's lower terraces if stairs are difficult.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Patan trip for parents and children
- Go between October and March and start by 8 am. The stepwell and Modhera have little shade and the sun is strong by late morning.
- At Rani ki Vav, walk down as far as is comfortable. The best sculpture begins on the first levels, and you do not need to reach the bottom.
- Wear shoes with good grip, since the old stone steps and temple floors can be slippery.
- Hire a car and driver for the whole day, including Modhera and Siddhpur. Taxis and app cabs are limited around Patan.
- Facilities are basic. Carry water, snacks, sun protection and any medicines, and note the nearest hospital before you set out.
- Book hotel stays and the patola museum visit in advance, as options are limited and demonstrations depend on weavers being present.
