Area by area

Patan neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Near the main road and Patan Junction

Best for: Travellers who want easy access and a short drive to the stepwell

Good to know: Most of the town's hotels are on or near the main roads and are plain, business-style places. Check lift access, hot water and air conditioning in advance, as standards vary.

  2. 02

    Near Rani ki Vav

Best for: Early starts before the heat and crowds

Good to know: Staying close to the stepwell lets you arrive at opening time. Options are limited and simple, so confirm what is available before booking.

  3. 03

    Mehsana (about 40 km away)

Best for: Families who want a larger town with more hotel choice and better rail links

Good to know: Mehsana is the main railhead and has more hotels and restaurants. It means a drive of around an hour each way, but it also positions you well for Modhera.

Sights in this area: Vadnagar: Sharmishtha Lake and Kirti Toran

  4. 04

    Day trip from Ahmedabad

Best for: Travellers short of time who prefer a bigger city base

Good to know: Patan is roughly three hours from Ahmedabad by road. It is possible as a long day but tiring for older visitors, so an overnight stay is kinder.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
