The short answer

Mahavir Mandir: what visitors should know first

Go if you want to see how daily devotion works in Patna. It is right beside Patna Junction, so arrival or departure day works well. Avoid Tuesdays, Saturdays and festival days if you dislike queues, and keep belongings close.

History and context

The story behind Mahavir Mandir

Accounts credit Swami Balanand, a Ramanandi ascetic, with establishing the temple around 1730, but early records are uncertain. The temple was rebuilt in 1947 and again in 1987, when an earlier concrete structure was demolished to make way for a large marble temple.

The trust that runs the temple also operates welfare institutions, including the Mahavir Cancer Institute and Mahavir Arogya Hospital.

Why it matters

Why Mahavir Mandir is worth your time

Historical accounts credit a Ramanandi ascetic, Swami Balanand, with establishing the temple around 1730, although the early record is not firm. It became much busier after 1947, when many refugees arrived in Patna, and the current large marble temple was built after the earlier structure was demolished in 1987.

Its position beside the main railway station makes it the first piece of Patna many travellers meet. Seeing the crowd on a Tuesday shows how contemporary Hindu devotion here combines faith with a large charitable organisation, which runs hospitals alongside the temple.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The temple stands beside Patna Junction, which makes it easy to combine with a train arrival or a gap between connections. Leave your shoes at the stand, join the queue and keep your belongings secure; pickpocketing is a risk in any dense crowd.

Inside, the main shrine is dedicated to Hanuman in his Sankat Mochan form. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Hanuman's traditional days, queues are long, and on Ram Navami and New Year they can stretch beyond a kilometre. A weekday morning is much calmer and lets you absorb the bells and the chanting.

Before you leave, look for the prasad counters. The temple is well known for its naivedyam laddu, which devotees carry home. The trust that runs the temple also operates hospitals and other welfare institutions, so what you buy supports them. Treat the visit as a short stop of an hour rather than a full outing.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Avoid Tuesdays, Saturdays and festival days if you dislike queues
  • Leave shoes at the counter and keep valuables secure
  • Buy prasad only from official temple counters
  • Ask before photographing
