Why it matters
Why Buddha Smriti Park is worth your time
The park was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 27 May 2010, marking the 2554th birth anniversary of the Buddha. It stands on the site of the former Bankipur Central Jail, a change of use that suits its message of calm.
The stupa houses a relic pot excavated at Vaishali, previously displayed at Patna Museum. This links the park to Patna's role as the old Magadha capital and gives visitors a Buddhist introduction before day trips to Nalanda, Rajgir and Bodh Gaya.

How to experience it
Enter from Frazer Road and head for the Patliputra Karuna Stupa, the cream-coloured stupa rising about 200 feet in the middle. Relics from several Buddhist countries are enshrined inside and can be seen through glass. Walk the paths around it clockwise, as pilgrims do, at the levels that are open.
The rest of the park is laid out as gardens, with votive stupas from various countries, Bodhi tree saplings from Anuradhapura and Bodh Gaya, and a tall Buddha statue. A museum and meditation centre are also part of the complex. A walk through the whole park takes an unhurried hour or two.
Stay into the evening if the weather permits. The park hosts a laser show on Bihar's history, and the lighting around the stupa is attractive. Mahavir Mandir is visible from the park, so the two make a pair.
