The short answer

Patna Museum: what visitors should know first

Worth a visit if you enjoy older museums and have time after the Bihar Museum. The building and the Buddha relic casket are the draws. Display standards are more traditional, so go with modest expectations and check the current opening days.

History and context

The story behind Patna Museum

Patna Museum was founded on 3 April 1917. Its two-storey building, designed by Rai Bahadur Bishnu Swarup in a Mughal and Rajput style, was completed in 1928.

The Didarganj Yakshi, found on a Ganga riverbank in 1917, was displayed here until its move to the Bihar Museum. A casket said to hold Buddha's relics, excavated at the Vaishali stupa in 1958, remains on display.

Why it matters

Why Patna Museum is worth your time

Founded on 3 April 1917 to house antiquities from the Patna region, it spent a century as the state's chief museum. The Didarganj Yakshi, found on the Ganga bank in 1917, was its star object until it was moved to the Bihar Museum.

The museum matters as a record of how Bihar's past was first collected and shown. Its building, completed in 1928, is itself part of Patna's colonial-era civic quarter, and the Buddha relic casket connects directly to the Vaishali stupa and to the relics now enshrined at Buddha Smriti Park.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Look at the building before going in. It was designed by Rai Bahadur Bishnu Swarup and combines Mughal and Rajput motifs, which explains the local name Jadu Ghar, the house of magic. Entering through the colonnade gives you a sense of the period when most Indian state museums were first built.

The objects reward patient viewing. The casket said to hold relics of the Buddha, excavated at Vaishali in 1958, is the most significant display. The fossil tree, said to be over 200 million years old, is a curiosity that children tend to remember. The sculpture galleries cover terracotta and stone from Bihar's long history.

Do this museum after, not before, the Bihar Museum, which gives better context. A short visit of an hour and a half is enough unless you are a collector or historian; use the slower pace to sit in the cooler galleries.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm opening days locally
  • Visit after the Bihar Museum
  • Ask about lift access for upper floors
  • Carry water; ventilation can be limited
