The short answer
Bihar Museum: what visitors should know first
Yes, this is the best-organised indoor visit in Patna. Allow half a day, start with the orientation gallery, and see the Didarganj Yakshi first. It is air-conditioned, level and comfortable for older visitors and children alike.
History and context
The story behind Bihar Museum
The museum was partly opened on 15 August 2015, with the children's museum, entrance area and orientation theatre. The remaining galleries opened in October 2017. Maki and Associates of Japan and OPOLIS of Mumbai were appointed in January 2012 after a design competition, and Lord Cultural Resources designed the exhibitions.
The site covers about 13.9 acres on Bailey Road. A proposed heritage tunnel linking it to Patna Museum was approved in 2023, but visitors should not count on it.

Why it matters
Why Bihar Museum is worth your time
Bihar was home to Magadha, Pataliputra, Nalanda and Bodh Gaya, but visitors seldom get a single place that connects them. This museum does that. Seeing objects from several of these sites together makes the day trips outside Patna easier to understand.
It also reflects a modern idea of how a state museum should work. It was designed by the Tokyo-based Maki and Associates with Mumbai's OPOLIS after an international competition, and has been recognised with a five-star GRIHA green-building rating. It opened in stages from 2015, with the main galleries following in October 2017.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start in the orientation gallery and its short film, which sets out the museum's logic before you wander. The history galleries then move through Bihar's early periods, including Harappan material, the Maurya and Gupta eras, and carved stupa railings. Keep time for the Didarganj Yakshi, the polished sandstone figure that is the museum's best-known object.
The museum is not only about antiquities. The regional gallery covers Bihar's crafts and folk traditions, and the children's gallery uses interactive displays on wildlife, history and culture, which works well for families. A visible-storage gallery shows more objects than the main displays can carry.
Build in a break at the cafeteria or at The Potbelly, the museum's restaurant serving Bihari food. The grounds are part of the design, with courtyards and water, so step outside between galleries. Two to three hours is the minimum for a satisfying visit; the full set takes longer.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
