Patna sits on the south bank of the Ganga and has been a capital in one form or another for well over two thousand years. Buddhist tradition places the founding of its ancestor, Pataliputra, around 490 BCE, and the city later became the centre of the Maurya empire. That depth is not always obvious on the ground: modern Patna is a crowded, busy administrative city, and its older layers are scattered across a long east-west strip beside the river.
The visit works best if you group sights by area. Central Patna holds the Bihar Museum, Patna Museum, Golghar, Gandhi Maidan and Buddha Smriti Park, all within a short ride of each other. Mahavir Mandir stands beside the railway station. The older eastern side has Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five Sikh takhts and the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, along with Agam Kuan and the Mauryan remains at Kumhrar.
Patna is also the natural base for Bihar's Buddhist and ancient sites. Nalanda is about 90 km to the south-east and Bodh Gaya about 110 km to the south, so many travellers use the city for a night or two before or after those trips. Winter, from November to February, is by far the most comfortable season.
For parents and older travellers, the city is manageable if you keep the day short. The museums are indoors and level, the park and gurdwara are easy walking, and only Golghar's staircase is genuinely demanding. The real challenges are traffic, which can turn a short distance into a long drive, and the heat of April to June.
