The short answer
Gandhi Maidan: what visitors should know first
Worth an easy hour, mainly for orientation and the evening air. It is an open ground, not a sight with a single ticket, so combine it with Golghar and the Gandhi Sangrahalaya, and avoid it on rally or festival days when crowds are large.
History and context
The story behind Gandhi Maidan
Under British rule the site was a golf course and racing track known as Patna Lawns. After land was donated for the independence movement it became a venue for the Champaran movement and the 1942 Quit India movement, with leaders including Mahatma Gandhi and Rajendra Prasad addressing gatherings.
The ground was renamed Gandhi Maidan in 1948 after Gandhi's death. It covers about 60 acres, with Golghar on its western side.

Why it matters
Why Gandhi Maidan is worth your time
The ground was once the British-era Patna Lawns, a golf course and racecourse used by Europeans and a few Indians. Land donated for the national movement later made it a public stage. Gandhi's meeting here during the Champaran movement is remembered as the first time Indians could enter without restriction, and it later hosted Quit India gatherings.
It was renamed Gandhi Maidan in 1948. Today it remains where Bihar's chief minister raises the flag on Independence Day and where large political rallies are held, so it is a useful place to understand the state's public life alongside its older monuments.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Gandhi Maidan as a place to walk and look rather than tick off. Enter from the Golghar side so the granary frames the western edge, then circle the ground along the perimeter path. Morning walkers, cricket games and small groups doing exercises give you a good picture of ordinary Patna.
Look for the large statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the southern end, which is a popular meeting point. In the north-west corner the Gandhi Sangrahalaya holds a museum on Gandhi's association with Bihar, and is the best way to connect the empty lawn to what happened on it.
Go back at dusk if the weather suits. The surrounding streets fill with food carts and the ground feels more lived-in. Avoid days of large rallies, Independence Day and Republic Day ceremonies unless you specifically want to see them, as traffic around the ground can be heavy.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Avoid rally days and major national-day ceremonies
- Carry water; shade is limited
