Udhampur (UHP) is the nearest railhead, about 47 km from Patnitop. Jammu Tawi (JAT) is the main station for long-distance trains from Delhi and elsewhere, roughly 110 km away by road. Taxis wait at both, but pre-booking is wise in peak season.
How to reach Patnitop by road
Patnitop lies on the Jammu–Srinagar national highway (NH44, formerly NH1A), reached via Udhampur, Chenani and Kud. The Chenani–Nashri tunnel bypasses the hill, so tell your driver to take the old road. Buses on the Jammu–Srinagar route also stop at Patnitop.
Getting around Patnitop
A private car or taxi is the practical way to reach Nag Mandir's approach, Natha Top, Sanasar and Sudh Mahadev. There are no regular local bus loops between sights. The Skyview ropeway connects Sanget with Patnitop when operating; check days before planning around it.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Patnitop
- Take the approach slowly: the road from Udhampur climbs through hairpins, so travel in the morning, carry travel-sickness tablets if needed and avoid driving after dark.
- Do the Sanasar road and Natha Top by car, with short walks only. Natha Top and the meadow are viewpoints, not climbs.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
