Day 1: Nag Mandir, a meadow and sweets on the way down
Leave Jammu or Udhampur early and make sure your driver takes the old road rather than the tunnel. Reach Patnitop by late morning, walk down to Nag Mandir if the weather is dry, then have lunch at your hotel. In the afternoon, drive along the Sanasar road to the meadow and lake for an easy hour, with Natha Top as an optional stop if the sky is clear. Head back in good time and stop at Kud for patisa before the road drops towards Udhampur.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Nag Mandir 30–60 minutes Moderate Weekday mornings in dry weather; Nag Panchami for the festival, not for quiet Natha Top 1–2 hours including the drive Moderate Clear mornings in May–June and September–October; snow in winter Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Nag Mandir: The approach involves walking down a gully from the highway and back up again, which can be hard on knees and in wet or icy weather. Seating is limited. If steps are a worry, ask the driver whether a closer drop-off is possible and keep the visit short.
With parents at Natha Top: The viewpoint is reached by a short walk and some uneven ground. Altitude and wind can feel cold even on a sunny day. Older travellers should wear warm layers, wear grip shoes and choose a dry day.

Day 1: Arrival, Nag Mandir and the town
Arrive by lunchtime, settle in and rest, because the altitude and the drive both tire older travellers. Walk the main chowk area and visit Nag Mandir in the late afternoon. Keep the evening quiet; it can get cold quickly even in the warmer months.

Day 2: Sanasar and Natha Top
Drive the Sanasar road in the morning when views are clearest, stopping at Natha Top and then the meadow and lake. If you are active, ask about paragliding or a pony ride at Sanasar. Return for a late lunch, then leave for Kud and Jammu with a patisa stop on the way.

Day 2: Sanasar, Natha Top and the ropeway

Day 3: Sudh Mahadev and the road home
Make an early start for Sudh Mahadev, allowing a good part of the morning for the road and the temple, with Gauri Kund on the way. Return via Chenani and Kud for sweets, then continue to Udhampur, Jammu or Katra. Skip Sudh Mahadev during the Sawan full-moon festival if you dislike crowds.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Patnitop trip for parents and children
- Take the approach slowly: the road from Udhampur climbs through hairpins, so travel in the morning, carry travel-sickness tablets if needed and avoid driving after dark.
- Cold is the main issue at 2,000 m. Pack warm layers even in summer evenings, and in winter choose a hotel with working heating and hot water.
- Pick a hotel on level ground with a lift or ground-floor rooms. Several properties sit on steep slopes with many steps.
- Do the Sanasar road and Natha Top by car, with short walks only. Natha Top and the meadow are viewpoints, not climbs.
- Check the Skyview ropeway's operating days before you plan around it, and ask about boarding assistance.
- Skip paragliding and horse rides unless your doctor agrees, and always use an operator who can show equipment and licence details.
