Pinjore is a small town in Panchkula district, Haryana, at the foot of the Shivalik Hills on the road from Chandigarh towards Kalka and Shimla. Most visitors come for one reason: the Yadavindra Gardens, a terraced garden laid out in the Mughal manner, usually credited to Fidai Khan, a courtier of Aurangzeb, and later maintained by the Patiala rulers. It is about 20 kilometres from Chandigarh, so it works best as a gentle half-day rather than a destination you plan a long stay around.
What makes Pinjore more interesting than a pleasant lawn is what sits next door. The Bhima Devi temple site adjoins the garden: the excavated remains of a Shaiva temple complex from the early medieval period, with more than a hundred carved sculptures now set out in an open-air museum. Reading the two together, the older ruin and the later garden that grew up beside it, is what gives the visit some depth.
Beyond the garden there is a handful of small, quieter additions. Kaushalya Dam, a few kilometres away, draws winter birds. Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the hills beyond. The Kalika Devi temple in Kalka, a short drive north, is the local pilgrimage stop, and Kalka is also where the narrow-gauge line to Shimla begins. Pinjore also hosts the annual Mango Festival in summer and a heritage festival in winter, both run in the garden.
For older travellers it is an easy place: the garden is mostly gentle terraces, the temple museum is flat, and a car can get you very close to both. Plan the visit for the cooler months, go in the morning or late afternoon, and treat it as a companion to Chandigarh or a stop on the way up to the hills.
