Plan 01

1 day in Pinjore

  1. 01

Day 1: Garden, temple ruins and Kalka

Reach Yadavindra Gardens soon after opening, when the air is cool and the terraces are quiet. Walk from the top terrace down, pausing at the palace structures and the water channels, then cross to the Bhima Devi temple site museum next door to see the excavated sculptures. Have lunch near the garden, rest for an hour, then drive about 5 km north to Kalka for the Kalika Devi temple and a look at the station where the Shimla narrow-gauge line begins. Return to Chandigarh by evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Yadavindra Gardens (Pinjore Garden)2 to 3 hours with the temple site next doorModerateOctober to March, early morning or late afternoon
Bhima Devi Temple Site Museum45 to 75 minutesEasyOctober to March, morning

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Yadavindra Gardens (Pinjore Garden): Paths are broad and mostly gentle, but the garden descends in seven terraces with steps and slopes between them. Benches and shade are available, and you can enjoy the upper terraces without covering the whole garden. Ask at the gate about vehicle access.

Plan 02

2 days in Pinjore

  1. 01

Day 1: The garden and the ruins

Spend the morning at Yadavindra Gardens and the Bhima Devi temple site museum, with an unhurried lunch and rest. Come back for the evening if the garden is lit that night, and check current timings.

Day 2: Kalka and the water

Visit Kalika Devi temple early, then see the Kalka station and, if you like trains, the narrow-gauge platforms. In the afternoon drive to Kaushalya Dam for a gentle walk by the water and, in winter, for birds.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 03

3 days in Pinjore

  1. 01

    Day 1: Yadavindra Gardens

Take the garden slowly: top-to-bottom walk, a long sit at the palace terrace, and the temple site museum next door.

  2. 02

Day 2: Kalka and the foothills railway

Visit Kalika Devi temple and the Kalka station area. If you wish to ride the Shimla narrow-gauge line, book ahead and treat it as a separate outing rather than squeezing it into Pinjore.

  3. 03

Day 3: Water, wildlife or the hills

Choose between Kaushalya Dam for birds, the Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary area for forest, or a longer drive to Morni Hills for cooler air and lake views. Check access and any forest-department rules before you go.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bir Shikargah Wildlife Sanctuary: Terrain is rough and facilities are limited, with uneven forest tracks and little seating. Not ideal for travellers with limited mobility unless seen from a vehicle.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Pinjore trip for parents and children

  • Go in the first two hours after opening or in the late afternoon; midday sun on the terraces is strong from April to September.
  • Ask at the gate about vehicle access and wheelchair routes; the garden descends in terraces, so decide in advance how many levels you will walk.
  • Carry water and a hat; shade is patchy in the open terraces.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip; stone steps and paths can be uneven and slippery after rain.
  • The Bhima Devi temple site is flat and mostly open to the sky, so keep it for a cooler hour of the day.
  • Avoid weekend and festival crowds if noise or queues tire you; weekday mornings are calmest.
